Strategiesformodifyingelectrodesurfacestocontrolelectrochemicalreactivityviaimmobilizedmoleculeshavebecomehighlydeveloped,indicatinggreatpromiseintheareaofelectronicandopticaldevices,chemicalsensors,andmodelsforthestudyofinterfacialreactivityandfundamentalchargetransferprocesses.Ferrocenylthiolsadsorbedontogoldelectrodeshavebeenwidelyusedinmanyelectrochemicalapplicationsinmixedorone-componentsSAMs,insomecasesinveryadverseenvironments(e.g.,inconcentratedsulfuricacid;Issa,T.B.etal.ACSSym.Ser.,1998,690,257).Inthenowclassicdemonstration(Hickman,J.J.etal.Science,1991,252,688)ofmixed-SAMpHsensors,ferrocenylandquinonethiols(cf.descriptionofproductcat.noTE004)wereusedtoformamixedmonolayeronAumicroelectrodestogiveatwo-terminal,voltammetricmicrosensorwithreferenceandsensorfunctionsonthesameelectrode.Thedetectionwasbasedonmeasurementofthepotentialdifferenceofcurrentpeaksforoxidationandreductionofthereference(ferrocene)andindicator(quinone).Sincethequinonehasahalf-wavepotentialthatispH-sensitiveitwaspossibletouseitasapHindicator;theferrocenewasapH-insensitivereference.
