TheDSHBwascreatedin1986bytheInstituteofChildHealthandHumanDevelopment(NIH)tobankanddistributehybridomasandthemonoclonalantibodies(MAbs)theyproducetothegeneralscientificcommunityinordertofacilitateresearch.Oneintentionwas,andstillis,tokeepthepriceoftheMAbslowsothatresearcherscantestmultipleMAbswithoutcommitmentofsignificantfunds,thencontinuetoutilizethoseofinterestwithoutworryofexpense.AsecondintentwastorelievescientistsofthetimeandexpenseofdistributinghybridomasandMAbstheyhaddeveloped.AthirdintentwastoassurethescientificcommunitythatMAbswithlimiteddemandwouldstillremainavailable.Wehavestrivedoverthepast23yearstoremaintruetoourmission.

Since1996wehavebeencompletelyself-sufficient,requiringnofundsfromNIH.TheDSHBcontinuestorespondrapidlytoqueriesbycustomersconcerningproductqualityandapplication.Ifthereisaproblemwithasupernatant,weimmediatelyretestitand,ifnecessary,immediatelyreclonethehybridomacellline.Inthepasttwoyears,wehaverecloned200lines,withanaverageincreaseinimmunoglobulinproductionsof71%.TheBankhasbeenmovedtonewfacilitiesforbetterqualitycontrol.Itisonethirdofthewaythroughatwoyearprogramtorecloneandcharacterizethemajor400linesforoptimumantibodyproductionandhighersupernatanttiters.TheDSHBnowbankscloseto1100hybridomasandhasbeengrowingatarateof10to20%ayear.Recentlyweobtainedacollectionofhybridomasagainstproteinsinvolvedinmusculardystrophies,andacollectionagainstthemajorcytoskeletalelementsofthemodelorganismDictyostiliumdiscoideum.Wealsoreceivedthefirst200hybridomasthatwilleventuallyexpandtothousandsofhybridomasagainstproteinsinvolvedincancerfromanNCIinitiative.

Wehaverecentlybeenpromisedseveraladditionalcollections.In2008,weinitiatedtheDSHB-Microbe,whichwillbankanddistributehybridomasagainstviral,bacterial,fungalandparasiticantigens.Wehavealsobegundevelopmentofantibodychipswhichwillcontainbetween50and500antibodiesagainstrelatedtargets.Theyshouldbeavailableinlate2009,atcost.Finally,wehavebeguntodeveloptheDSHBInstituteforMonoclonalAntibodyResearchwhichwillfocusoncancerdiagnosisandcancerstemcells.Inthelasttwelvemonths,wehavefilledover9000ordersformorethan30,000supernatantsamplesand/orhybridomas.

Ourmissionistocontinuetogrowandservetheneedsofthescientificcommunity,aswehavedonenowforover20years.Andourpriceswillremainlowandourqualityhigh.
