BACKGROUND

Lysosome-associatedmembraneproteins(LAMP1andLAMP2)aremajorconstituentsofthelysosomalmembrane.Thesetwoproteinshavecloselyrelatedstructureswith37%sequencehomology.Botharetransmembraneglycoproteinslocalizedprimarilyinlysosomesandlateendosomes.LAMP2hasalsobeendetectedattheplasmamembraneofcellsundergoingdifferentiationandactivationandincellsthatsecretelysosomalhydrolases.CellsurfaceLAMP1andLAMP2promoteadhesionofhumanperipheralbloodmononuclearcells(PBMC)tovascularendotheliumwhichsuggeststhattheLAMPproteinsareinvolvedinadhesionofPBMCtositesofinflammation.DefectsinLAMP2areassociatedwithDanondisease.
