PGE2是花生四烯酸经过环氧合酶COX2途径最主要的代谢物。在体内，PGE2通过PG15-脱氢酶可快速的转换为一种无活性的代谢物(13,14-dihydro-15-ketoPGE2)。PGE2在循环系统的半衰期大约为30秒钟，血浆中的正常水平为3-12pg/ml。由于PGE2快速代谢的特点，因此要检测体内PGE2的生物合成，通常采用检测PGE2的代谢物来实现。

前列腺素F2α(ProstaglandinF2α,PGF2α)是由花生四烯酸经酶催化还原PGH2而产生的。PGF2α在循环系统中的半衰期极短。PGF2α在人血浆中的浓度<10pg/ml，甚至可能低于1-2pg/ml。PGF2α可被15-羟基前列腺素脱氢酶以及β-和-ω氧化体系，快速催化代谢为多种极性的代谢物，包括13,14-dihydro-15-keto PGF2α。在细胞培养中，PGF2α的代谢受限，可从培养基中收集测定其浓度。
