OncostatinM(OSM)isagrowthanddifferentiationfactorthatparticipatesintheregulationofneurogenesis,osteogenesisandhematopoiesis.ProducedbyactivatedTcells,monocytesandKaposi"ssarcomacells,OSHcanexertbothstimulatoryandinhibitoryeffectsoncellproliferation.Itstimulatestheproliferationoffibroblasts,smoothmusclecellsandKaposi"ssarcomacells,but,inhibitsthegrowthofsomenormalandtumorcelllines.Italsopromotescytokinerelease(e.g.IL-6,GM-CSFandG-CSF)fromendothelialcells,andenhancestheexpressionoflow-densitylipoproteinreceptorinhepatomacells.OSMshareseveralstructuralandfunctionalcharacteristicswithLIF,IL-6,andCNTF.HumanOSMisactiveonmurinecells.
