ToxinconsistingofanAsubunit（27kDa）surroundedbyfiveBsubunits（approximately12kDaeach）,whichattachthetoxintogangliosideGM1onthecellsurface.TheAsubunitcatalyzesADP-ribosylationoftheα-subunitofthestimulatoryGprotein（Gαs）,reducingGTPaseactivityａndactivatingtheα-subunit.ThisactivationofGαsleadstoanincreaseintheactivityofadenylylcyclase,resultinginincreasedlevelsofcAMP.AlsoADP-ribosylatestransducinintheeyerodoutersegments,inactivatingitsGTPaseactivity.CholeratoxinhasalsobeenreportedtoADP-ribosylatetubulin.Showntobeapotentmucosalvaccineadjuvant,inducingThelpercelltype2responsesbyinhibitingtheproductionofinterleukin-12.
