Excitatoryamino-acidtransporters(EAATs),alsoknownasglutamatetransporters,belongtothefamilyofneurotransmittertransporters.EAATsservetoterminatetheexcitatorysignalbyremovalofglutamatefromtheneuronalsynapseintoneurogliaandneurons.Afterglutamateisreleasedastheresultofanactionpotential,glutamatetransportersquicklyremoveitfromtheextracellularspacetokeepitslevelslow,therebyterminatingthesynaptictransmission.Theactivityofglutamatetransportersalsoallowsglutamatetoberecycledforrepeatedrelease.Glutamatetransportersalsotransportaspartateandarepresentinvirtuallyallperipheraltissue.TheyexhibitstereoselectivityforL-glutamatebuttransportbothL-andD-aspartate.
