KCC2iswidelythoughttobeexpressedexclusivelyinneuronswhereitisresponsibleformaintaininglowintracellularchlorideconcentrationtodrivehyperpolarizingpost-synapticresponsestotheinhibitoryneurotransmittersGABAandglycine(Leeetal.,2007).KCC2isexpressedinmostadultneurons,andexpressionlevelscorrelatewellwiththematurationstateofneurons.N-ethylmaleimide(NEM)hasbeenshowtoincreasephosphorylationoftheSer940residue,whiledecreasingphosphorylationofT1007residue.DephosphorylationofresiduesT906andT1007correlateswithincreasedKCC2activity(Mossetal.,2017).
