Neuropeptides VIP and PACAP inhibit the apoptosis of activated T cells

Vasoactiveintestinalpeptide(VIP)andthestructurallyrelatedpituitaryadenylatecyclase-activatingpolypeptide(PACAP),twoneuropeptidespresentinthelymphoidmicroenvironment,elicitabroadspectrumofBIOLOGicalfunctions,includingthemodulationofinnateandadaptiveimmunity.AnotherimportantimmunoregulatoryfunctionofVIPandPACAPistheirinhibitioneffectonAICDinTcells.TheyinhibittheTCR-stimulatedFasLexpressionandapoptosisofTcellthroughspecificreceptorsandinductionofintracellularcAMP.VIPdown-regulatec-Mycsynthesis,theNF-AT-dependentEgr2andEgr3expression,theNF-ATandNF-kB.
