| Scientific Background: | Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) is an intermediate-filament (IF) protein that is specific for cells of astroglial lineage. The major IF protein expressed in precurosor astrocytes in the CNS is usually vimentin. A switch between vimentin and GFAP expression occurs following astrocyte maturation, making GFAP a widely used marker for astrocyte maturation. GFAP expression is modulated by several hormones including thyroid hormone, glucocorticoids and several growth factors such as FGF, CNTF, and TGF-beta. |
