Backgroundinformation

ActivinAisamemberoftheTGF-βsuperfamilyandisinvolvedinawiderangeofBIOLOGicalprocesseslikegrowthanddifferentiationofseveraltissues.Ithasbeendescribedtoaffectembryogenesisandhematopoiesisandisnecessaryforthemaintenanceofself-renewalandpluripotencyofhumanembryonicstemcells(hESCs).Itsupportslong-termfeederandserum-freegrowthofhESCs.ActivinAinducestheexpressionofOct4,Nanog,Nodal,Wnt3,FGF-2,andFGF-8andsuppressestheBMPsignal.Italsocontrolstheexpressionandsecretionofhormoneslikefolliclestimulatinghormone(FSH),prolactin,andACTH(corticotrophin).Theaminoacidsequenceofhuman,mouse,andratactivinAshares100%identity.
