Background
By post-translational covalent conjugation to other proteins within the cell, small ubiquitinrelatedmodifiers (SUMOs) are able to regulate the cell-cycle through a common enzyme cascade involving the same E1activating and E2 conjugating enzymes. In vertebrates, three SUMO proteins have been identified: SUMO-1, and thehighly similar SUMO-2 and SUMO-3 (often referred to as SUMO-2/3). Comparably, one SUMO protein is expressed byinvertebrates. Post-translational modifications by SUMO are thought to regulate multiple processes, includingtranscription, subcellular protein localization, and the stability of proteins.
