Superoxidedismutase(SOD)isoneofthemostimportantantioxidativeenzymes.Itcatalyzesthedismutationofthesuperoxideanionintohydrogenperoxideandmolecularoxygen.ThesensitiveSODassaykitutilizesWST-1thatproducesawater-solubleformazandyeuponreductionwithsuperoxideanion.Therateofthereductionwithasuperoxideanionislinearlyrelatedtothexanthineoxidase(XO)activity,andisinhibitedbySOD(below).Therefore,theinhibitionactivityofSODcanbedeterminedbyacolorimetricmethod.
