Heat Inactivation (56°C - 30 min) :
This treatment allows to destroy the complement acting in the immune system to avoid an interference with some experimentation, in particular the tests of immunology. It allows also to inactivate viruses and to destroy some bacterial contaminants such as the mycoplasma.

Gamma Irradiation :
The serum is gamma irradiated at 25 kGy.
Gamma irradiated serum minimizes the risk associated with the use of animal products and offers protection against low levels of microbial contaminants. The treatment inactivates the viruses of foot and mouth disease, vesicular stomatitis,rinderpest, peste des petits ruminants, Rift valley fever, bluetongue. while maintaining growth promotion potential.

Charcoal Stripping :
BioInd offers Charcoal / Dextran stripped Fetal Bovine serum for researchers requiring low levels of hormones. Charcoal / Dextran stripping reduces the concentration of steroid hormones in serum such as estradiol, progesterone, cortisol, testosterone, T3 and T4. This serum is usefull where there endogenous molecules may interfere with experimental works. This serum may show some reduced growth promotion ability for cells requiring the presence of certain hormones (Biblio: Northbio).

Dialysation :
The dialysis reduces the concentration of free low molecular weight components such as nucleotides, amino acids, hormones and ions. We use a dynamic filtration method to produce our dialysed serum.


IgG low ( < 5 mg / l) :
The IgG level in the fetal bovine serum is in general between 50 and 200mg/l, it is a low level compared to the other sera as the New Born Calf serum. However, this level can cause some problems for some utilisations, that is why we select the sera with a level < 5mg/l for the users.

Lipid Depletion : BioInd uses the fumed silica precipitation method for removing lipids. The fumed silica powder is added to the serum. Its well mixed together. After the solution is centrifuged. The supernatant contains the serum and the lipids are with the silica in the pellet.
 

Calcium Stripping :
The calcium depletion is achieved using chromatography columns (ion-exchange resin). This resin is selective for divalent cations over monovalent cations (It follows that copper, iron, magnesium, zinc etc. levels will be lowered too) . This serum may show some reduced growth promotion of cells requiring the presence of calcium or other divalent cations.

Tetracycline :
The serum is tested for the presence of Chlortetracycline, Oxytetracycline and Tetracycline by a liquid chromatography electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry method. The detection limit is < 0.05 mg/l.

Iron Supplementation :
A 1% Ferric citrate sterile solution is added to the serum at 0,246% (v/v). Then the serum is well mixed. Transferrin is normally 20 to 40 % bound to iron.
