Melanoma marker antibodies from GeneTex

Melanomas can be quite diverse in their histopathologic presentation and can differentiate in multiple ways reflecting fibroblastic, muscle, or neural elements, among others. This can make histologic diagnosis of melanoma samples challenging, particularly in those cases where the tumor produces little or no eumelanin. In order to properly distinguish melanomas from an array of other cancers, pathologists rely on detection of a variety of protein markers using an assortment of specific antibodies. The appropriate utilization of one or more of these reagents greatly increases the likelihood of a correct diagnosis and appropriate clinical management.
 While assessment of marker proteins is crucial in the clinical setting, it is also vitally important to both basic and clinical researchers studying the biology of melanomas.  Given the relative resistance of these tumors to present radiation and systemic therapies, more work is clearly required in order to offer novel insight into how to combat those melanomas that have advanced beyond surgical control. 
A recent publication by Dr. Ordóñez at the MD Anderson Cancer Center offers an outstanding and comprehensive discussion of immunohistochemical markers that are used to diagnose melanoma (PMID: 23648379). We at GeneTex would like to introduce some of our antibody products that are directed against these proteins.  Many of these reagents are monoclonal antibodies from clones that are commonly referenced in the literature and therefore are of potentially great value to melanoma researchers.
