Inhibinsareheterodimericpolypeptidehormones.Theyselectivelysuppressthesecretionofpituitaryfolliclestimulatinghormone(FSH)andalsohavelocalparacrineactionsonthegonads.Thefullyprocessedformoftheinhibinmoleculehasamolecularweightofapproximately32-36kDandconsistsofthetwodistinctchains(aandß),linkedbydisulfidebridges.Highermolecularweightforms,withprecursorformsofthea-subunit,alsooccurinfollicularfluidandserum.Inaddition,freea-subunitforms,unassociatedwithaß-subunit,andlackinginhibinbioactivity,arealsopresent.InhibinBconsistsofana-subunitandaßB-subunit.InhibinBisproducedbythesertolicellsofthetestisinthemaleandthegranulosacellsoftheovaryinthefemale.ItsprimaryroleappearstobeintheregulationofgametogenesisvianegativefeedbackontheproductionofFSH.SeveralpublishedreportsindicatetheutilityofmeasurementofInhibinBasanendocrineMarkerformonitoringthemaleandfemalegonadalfunction.TheInhibinBGenIIELISAusesthehighlycharacterizedpairofantibodiesthatspecificallyrecognizeonlythefunctionaldimericinhibinmoleculeanddoesnotmeasurethefreea-subunitformspresentinBIOLOGicalfluids.Thecurrentassaydoesnotrequiresamplepre-treatmentstepwithhydrogenperoxidetooxidizetwomethioninesintheepitopetothesulfoxideforfullimmunoreactivity
