Interleukin-17A(IL-17A,IL17A)isapotentproinflammatorycytokineproducedbyactivatedTh17(T-helper17)cellsandcertaincellsbelongingtotheinnateimmunesystem.Inmice,IL-17hasbeenshowntoalsobeproducedbyactivatedCD8+TcellsandγδTcells.Th17cellsplayanimportantroleinautoimmunediseasesandprotectionagainstbacteriaandfungi.IL-17Aactsonabroadrangeofcelltypestoinduceexpressionofcytokines,chemokinesandmetalloproteinases.Asaresult,secretionofIL-17Apromotesinflammatoryresponses,whichleadstotherecruitmentofneutrophils,enhancementofantibodyproductionandactivationofTcells.IncreasedexpressionofIL-17Aisseeninautoimmunediseasessuchasmultiplesclerosisandrheumatoidarthritis.Itisalsoassociatedwithasthma,psoriasis,cancerandtransplantrejection.
