DescriptionProteinGeneProduct(PGP)isanabundantcytoplasmicneuronandneuroendocrine-cellspecificprotein.Inrecentyears,antibodiestothisproteinhavebecomeestablishedasMarkersforneuronsandcellsofthediffuseneuroendocrinesystem(DNES).PGP9.5appearstobelongtoafamilyofubiquitin-carboxyterminalhydrolaseisoenzymes,butwhileitshowsactivitytowardssyntheticubiquitinesters,theinvivosubstrate(s)ofPGP9.5remainunknown.MonoclonalandpolyclonalantibodiesagainstPGP9.5willstainneuronalcellbodiesandaxonsinthecentralandperipheralnervoussystems,smallnervefibersinnervetissue,neuroendocrinecellsinthepituitary,thyroidpancreasetc.,andalsotumorsoftheDNES.Antibodiestothisproteinmarkercanbeappliedinneuropathology,inexperimentalstudiesofinnervationsofperipheraltissuesandinstudiesofthedevelopmentandpathologyoftheDNES.ItisemphasizedthatantibodiestoPGPareparticularlysuitablefordetectingsmallnervefibersinperipheraltissues.
