The fluorescentcontrolliposomes contain thelipophilicNearIRdyeDiRincorporatedinthebilayers.Itisusedfortrackingthecellularuptakeoftheliposomesinvitroandinvivobycommonmethodslikeconfocal,FACS,NIRimagingetc.  ThenearIRfluorescent,lipophiliccarbocyanine DiOC18(7)("DiR") isweaklyfluorescentinwaterbuthighlyfluorescentandquitephotostablewhenincorporatedintomembranes.ThesulfonategroupsincorporatedintothisDiIanalogimproveswatersolubility.Ithasanextremelyhighextinctioncoefficientandshortexcited-statelifetimes(~1nanosecond)inlipidenvironments.
