BreastcancerremainsthesecondprimarycauseofcancerdeathsinfemalesaswellasthemostcommonlydiagnosedcancerinwomenintheUnitedStates.AccordingtotheNationalBreastCancerFoundation,everyyearmorethan252,000womeninthecountryarediagnosedwithbreastcancerandover40,000willdie.TheMCF-7celllinewasderivedfroma69-year-oldCaucasianfemalein1970andisthemostextensivelystudiedandfrequentlyusedofallthehumanbreastcancercelllines.MCF-7standsforMichiganCancerFoundation–7(referringtotheinstitutewherein1973thecelllinewasdiscoveredbySouleandassociates).Thiscelllineisaperfectmodeltostudythepathwayofmalignantprogression.PrevioustoMCF-7,nomammarycelllinecouldlivelongerthanafewmonths.MCF-7hasmultiplecharacteristicsofdifferentiatedmammaryepithelium,includingthecapabilityofformingdomesandtheabilitytoprocessestrADIolviacytoplasmicestrogenreceptors.TNFalphainhibitsthegrowthofMCF-7breastcancercells.Applyinganti-estrogenscantransformthesecretionofinsulin-likegrowthfactorbindingproteins.CellsfromtheMCF-7breastcancercelllinearewidelyregardedasanearperfectmodeltoexaminethegrowthofmalignanttumors.AltogenBiosystemsproducespre-optimizedhigh-efficiencytransfectionreagentkitsfortheMCF-7breastcancercellline.
