BACKGROUND
Mycobacteriaaresmall,slow-growing,aerobicbacilli.Theyaredistinguishedbyacomplex,lipid-richcellenveloperesponsiblefortheircharacterizationasacid-fast(ie,resistanttodecolorizationbyacidafterstainingwithcarbolfuchsin)andtheirrelativeresistancetoGramstain.Themostcommonmycobacterialinfectionistuberculosis;othersincludeleprosyandvariousdiseasescausedbyMycobacteriumaviumcomplex.ThetermMycobacteriumaviumcomplex(MAC)referstotwospecies:MaviumandMintracellulare.Becausethesespeciesaredifficulttodifferentiate,theyarealsocollectivelyreferredtoasMycobacteriumavium-intracellulare(MAI).MACprimarilyaffectsindividualswhoareimmunecompromised(eg,fromAIDS,hairycellleukemia,immunosuppressivechemotherapy).
