MonomericIgM(ImmunoglobulinM)isfoundonthesurfaceofBcellswhereastheIgMmoleculessecretedfromplasmaBcellsarepentamers,i.e.fiveIgMmoleculesjoinedtogetherbytheJchain.IgMconstitutesapproximately10%ofthetotalIgconcentrationinserum.IgMisthefirstantibodyisotypeinducedinatypicalimmuneresponseandhenceistheisotypewiththelowestaffinityforantigens.Duetoitsstructure,with10antigen-bindingsitesperIgMpentamer,itcanneverthelessbinde.g.surface-boundantigenswithaveryhighAvidity.
