HGFisapotent,mesenchymally-derivedmitogenformatureparenchymalhepatocytes,andactsasagrowthfactorforabroadspectrumoftissuesandcelltypes.HGFsignalsthroughatransmembranetyrosinekinasereceptorknownasMET.ActivitiesofHGFincludetheinductionofcellproliferation,motility,morphogenesis,inhibitionofcellgrowth,andenhancementofneuronsurvival.HGFisacrucialmitogenforliverregenerationprocesses,especiallyafterpartialhepatectomyandotherliverinjuries.HumanandmurineHGFarecross-reactive.HumanHGFisexpressedasalinear,polypeptide-precursorglycoproteincontaining697 aminoacidresidues.ProteolyticprocessingofthisprecursorgeneratesthebiologicallyactiveheterodimericformofHGF,whichconsistsoftwopolypeptidechains(α-chainandβ-chain)heldtogetherbyasingledisulfidebondresultinginformationofabiologicallyactiveheterodimer.Theα-chainconsistsof463 aminoacidresiduesandfourkringledomains.Theβ-chainconsistsof234 aminoacidresidues.RecombinantHumanHGFisan80.0 kDapolypeptideconsistingof697 aminoacidresidues.
