Description:

Twomembersofthetype5subfamilyoftypeIcytokinereceptorscanserveasreceptorsforIL-13.IL-13canbindtoIL-13Ralpha1(CD213a1;previouslydesignatedIL-13RalphaorNR4)withlowaffinity,thenrecruitstheIL-4Ralphachaintoformahighaffinityreceptor,causingdownstreamSTAT6activation.Alternately,IL-13canbindIL-13Ralpha2(CD213a2)withhighaffinity;thisinteractiondoesnotcauseactivationofSTAT6,butdoesinduceTGF-betaproduction.IL-13Ralpha1andIL-13Ralpha2eachhavethreeextracellularfibronectintypeIIIdomains,twocytokinereceptorhomologymodulesandaWSXWSmotiftypicaloftheclassIcytokinereceptorfamily,butIL-13Ralpha2hasamuchshortercytoplasmictail.IL-13Rsubunitscanbeexpressedonmonocytes,macrophages,fibroblasts,humanBcells,basophils,eosinophils,endothelialcells,andsmoothmusclecells.
