BackgroundApoptosisinhibitorofmacrophages(AIM)isamemberofthescavengerreceptorcysteine-richdomainsuperfamily(SRCR-SF)initiallyidentifiedasaninducIBLecellsurfaceligandofCD5.ItwasshownthatAIMfunctionsinthethymusastheinducerofresistancetoapoptosiswithinCD4+/CD8+thymocytesandasthesupporteroftheviABIlityofthesecellsbeforethymicselection.AIMwasalsoshowntosupportmacrophagesurvivalandenhancetheirphagocyticfunction.MorerecentexperimentsusingrecombinantAIMsignificantlyinhibitedapoptosisofNKTandTcellsobtainedfromC.parvum-stimulatedliversinvitro,suggestingthatAIMfunctionstoinduceresistancetoapoptosisinthesecellsandsupportshostdefenseagainstinflammationduringinfection.
