DescriptionTheMyoglobinELISAisintendedforthequantitativedeterminationofmyoglobininhumanserum.Myoglobin,ahemeproteinwithamolecularweightofapproximately17,500Daltonsisfoundinbothcardiacandskeletalmuscle.Damagetoeithertypeofmusclefollowingconditionssuchastrauma,ischemia,anddiseasesthatcausemyopathy,isassociatedwiththereleaseofmyoglobinintoserum.Specifically,followingcardiacnecrosisassociatedwithmyocardialinfarction(MI),myoglobinisoneofthefirstMarkerstoriseabovenormallevels.Anumberofreportssuggestusingthemeasurementofmyoglobinasadiagnosticaidinrulingoutmyocardialinfarctionwithnegativepredictivevaluesofupto100%reportedatcertaintimeperiodsaftertheonsetofsymptoms.UnliketheothercardiacenzymessuchascreeatinekinaseandtheMBisoform(i.e.,CKandCK/MB)whichdonotreachserumlevelsuntilseveralhourspost-infarction(approx.19hours),myoglobinlevelscanbeexpectedtopeakwithin6to9hours.
