Description:

Thetransforminggrowthfactorbeta1(TGF-ß1)genecodesamultifunctionalcytokinethatcontrolsproliferation,differentiation,andotherfunctionsinmanycelltypes,includingcancercells,thesurroundingstromalcells,immunecells,endothelialandsmooth-musclecells.Itcausesimmunosuppressionandangiogenesis,whichmakesthecancermoreinvasive.TGF-ßalsoconvertseffectorT-cells,whichnormallyattackcancerwithaninflammatory(immune)reaction,intoregulatory(suppressor)T-cells,whichturnofftheinflammatoryreaction.TGF-ßinducesapoptosisinnumerouscelltypes.TGF-ßcanactonADIpocyteprecursorcells.TGF-ß1hasbeenshowntobeapotentinhibitorofthedifferentiationofAdipogeniccelllines.Inaddition,adifferentiation-defective,insulin-independentcelllinederivedfromtheadipogeniccellline1246producesinitsconditionalmediumaTGF-ß1-likepolypeptidewhichcouldmodulatethecellABIlitytodifferentiateinanautocrinefashion.IncreasedTGF-b1expressionwasassociatedwithBMIandaBDominaladiposetissueinmorbidobesity.
