Transcriptionalfactors,OCT3/4(POU5F1)andSTAT3functionaskeyregulatorsinmaintainingpluripotencyofstemcells.Thus,POU5F1andSTAT3havebeenwidelyusedasmolecularMarkersofpluripotentialstemcells.Pluripotentialcell-specificNanoggeneisanewlyidentifiedhomeodomain-bearingtranscriptionalfactor.Importantly,Nanogisexpressedspecifictoearlyembryosandpluripotentialstemcellsincludingmouseandhumanembryonicstem(ES)andembryonicgerm(EG)cells.Itisakeymoleculeinvolvedinthesignalingpathwayformaintainingthecapacityforself-renewalandpluripotency,bypassingregulationbytheSTAT3pathway.Therefore,Nanogisoneofthemolecularmarkerssuitableforrecognizingtheundifferentiatedstateofstemcellsinthemouseandhuman.
