43kDaDystrophin-associatedglycoprotein;(43-DAG,DG,b-DAG,b-DG,DAG1)β-dystroglycanisacomponentofthedystrophinglycoproteincomplex(DGC),amembrane-spanningcomplexthatlinkstheinteriorCytoskeletontotheextracellularmatrixinmuscleandothertissues(Winder2001).Itisatransmembraneprotein(singleTMdomain)of34.9kDamolecularweight,andpI8.85,whichdisplaysanapparentmolecularweightof43kDabySDS-PAGEduetoasparagine-linkedglycosylationandahighproportionofprolineresiduesinthecytoplasmicdomain.ThedystroglycancomplexisasubcomplexwithintheDGCcomprisingalphaandbeta-subunits.Dystroglycanisofimportanceincellsignalling,cellpolarity,celladhesionandmovement.β-dystroglycanbindstodystrophin(inmusclecells)andutrophin(innon-musclecells),butdissociatesfromtheseproteinswhenphosphorylatedonTyr-892allowingitsassociationwithSH2containingproteinssuchasSrcandothercytOlinkerproteinssuchasplectin.ThisantibodyrecognisesTyr-892phosphorylatedformsofβ-dystroglycan(Tyr-892inhuman,Tyr-890inmouse)
