Cytokeratinsareasubfamilyofintermediatefilamentproteinsandarecharacterizedbyaremarkablebiochemicaldiversity,representedinHumanepithelialtissuesbyatleast20differentpolypeptides.Theyrangeinmolecularweightbetween40kDaand68kDaandisoelectricpHbetween4.97.8.TheindividualHumanCytokeratinsarenumbered1to20.ThevariousepitheliaintheHumanbodyusuallyexpressCytokeratinswhicharenotonlycharacteristicofthetypeofepithelium,butalsorelatedtothedegreeofmatuRationordifferentiationwithinanepithelium.Cytokeratinsubtypeexpressionpatternsareusedtoanincreasingextentinthedistinctionofdifferenttypesofepithelialmalignancies.TheCytokeratinantibodiesarenotonlyofassistanceinthedifferentialdiagnosisoftumorsusingimmunohistochemistryontissuesections,butarealsoausefultoolincytopathologyandflowcytometricassays.
