BackgroundInformationHistoneH2A.Bbd(Barrbody-deficient),alsoknownashistoneH2A-Bbdtype1,isanatypicalhistonevariant.ThishistonevariantassociateswithH2BandreplaceshistoneH2Ainthenucleosome.IncontrasttootherH2Ahistones,thisvariantlacksconservedresiduesthataretargetsofpost-translationalmodifications.ConsequentlythisH2A.Bbdvariantisabout15aminoacidsshorterandonly48%similartothecanonicalH2A.ThemajordifferencesbetweenthetwoarefoundinthedockingdomainthatlinksH2A-H2BtotheH3-H4tetramer.Nucleosomescontainingthishistoneadoptamorerelaxedstructureandprotect~118basepairsofDNAinsteadofthe147basepairsfoundinclassicalnucleosomes.ThisvarianthistoneisassociatedwithactiveXchromosomesandautosomes,andistypicallyabsentfrominactiveXchromosomes.
